To express the fraction as a single number, the quotient, we divide the numerator by the denominator.<br> There are three main kinds of fractions: <ul> <li><h4>Proper fractions</h4>The numerator is smaller than the denominator. <math>\frac{1}{4}</math> is a proper fraction.</li><br> <li><h4>Improper fractions</h4>The numerator is larger than the denominator. <math>\frac{5}{4}</math> is an improper fraction.</li><br> <li><h4>Mixed fractions</h4>A whole number combined with a proper fraction. <math>2\frac{3}{4}</math> is a mixed fraction.</li> </ul> It is important to note that improper fractions and mixed fractions can be used to express the same values. For example: <math>\frac{5}{4}=1\frac{1}{4}</math>.<br> When doing operations with fractions, it is usually easier to first convert any integers and/or mixed fractions into improper fractions: <ul> <li>To convert an integer into an improper fraction, simply place the integer over <math>1</math>. For example, <math>3</math> would become <math>\frac{3}{1}</math>.</li> <li>To convert a mixed fraction into an improper fraction, multiply the denominator (bottom number) by the whole number (number in front or to the left of the fraction), add the product to the numerator (top number), and write the sum over the original numerator. For example, in converting <math>2\frac{3}{4}</math> to an improper fraction, we would multiply the denominator, <math>4</math>, by the whole number, <math>2</math>, to get <math>8</math>. We would then add this to the numerator, <math>3</math>, to get <math>11</math>, which we would place over the original denominator, <math>4</math>, to get <math>\frac{11}{4}</math>.</li> </ul> <h4>Adding and subtracting fractions</h4> The general rule for adding fractions is: <math>\frac{a}{b}+\frac{c}{d}=\frac{ad}{bd}+\frac{bc}{bd}=\frac{ad+bc}{bd}</math><br> The general rule for subtracting fractions is: <math>\frac{a}{b}-\frac{c}{d}=\frac{ad}{bd}-\frac{bc}{bd}=\frac{ad-bc}{bd}</math><br> There are 4 steps to adding and subtracting fractions: <ol> <li>Simplify the fractions by reducing them, if possible. The gcf of a set of numbers is the highest number that can divide evenly into all numbers in the set with no remainder. V2-Topic-ConvertingWeightsUsingMass-Content	Mass, weight, and gravity are all intimately linked, and together help explain the behavior of our surroundings and universe.<br><br> <b>Mass</b><br> Mass represents the amount of matter that makes up an object or body, which determine the resistance of said object or body to a net force. The more mass an object has, the less of an effect a net force has on it. For example, it is easier to lift an empty suitcase than a full one, because it has less matter in it and therefore a smaller mass. It is also easier to stop a tennis ball from rolling down a hill than a boulder because a boulder contains a lot more matter and therefore has a greater mass than a tennis ball.<br><br> An object will also always have the same mass, regardless of its position, movement, or change in shape, so long as no matter is added or taken away. Let's say you toss a water balloon to your friend. The balloon changes position, shape, and movement, but, as long as no water escapes, it retains the same mass. If you decided to add or remove water, you'd be increasing or decreasing its mass.<br><br> The official unit for mass is Kilograms.<br><br> <b>Gravity</b><br> Newton's third law of motion states that two objects or bodies that are interacting apply equal forces to one another in opposite directions. According to the universal law of gravitation, this occurs with every object in the universe — every object in the universe with mass attracts every other object with mass. The amount of attraction between objects depends, however, on the mass of the objects and the distance between them. As mass increases, gravity increases linearly. As the distance between two objects increases, the gravitational force between them decreases exponentially (raised to a power of <math>2</math>). This means that if the mass of an object increases by a factor of <math>4</math>, the force of gravity acting on it would also increase by a factor of <math>4</math>. If the distance between two objects increases by a factor of <math>4</math>, the force of gravity acting on them would decrease by a factor of <math>16</math> (<math>4</math> to the power of <math>2</math>).<br><br> This relationship can be expressed as the following equation:<br> <math>F≈\frac{Mm}{r^2}</math><br> <math>F</math> represents the force of gravity, which is measured in meters per second squared.<br> <math>M</math> represents the mass of a planet.<br> <math>m</math> represents the mass of an object.<br> <math>r</math> represents the distance between the center of an object and the center of a planet.<br><br> Near the Earth's surface, the acceleration of gravity is approximately 9.81 m/s2 (32.2 ft/s2). This means that if we ignore the effects of air resistance, the speed of an object falling freely will increase by about 9.81 meters per second every second.<br><br> <b>Weight</b><br> Weight is a force that results from gravity acting on a massive object or body (in this context, "massive" does not refer to size, but rather an object or body that has mass) due to the presence of a second massive object or body, such as a planet. The center of each massive body is essentially pulling the center of the other toward itself, creating the force we call weight. For a more detailed description of this phenomenon, see the "Gravity" section above.<br><br> Because the mass and, therefore, gravity of each planet in our solar system is different, there are no two planets in our solar system on which your weight would be the same. In other words, your weight on Jupiter would be quite different from your weight on Saturn, and your weights on Jupiter and Saturn would be quite different from your weight on Earth! Your mass on all three, however, would stay the same.<br><br> Additionally, we often use the terms "mass" and "weight" interchangeably, when in reality they are actually quite different! For example, when someone has lost or gained weight they have really lost or gained mass in the form of fat or muscle. This increase or decrease in mass results in a proportional increase or decrease in the gravitational force acting on the person, and these two forces together result in what we think of as weight.<br><br> The official unit for weight is Newtons.<br><br> <b>Mass - Gravity - Weight connection</b><br> The connection between mass, gravity, and weight is that weight measures the degree to which a gravitational force is acting on a massive body or object (in this context, "massive" does not refer to size, but rather an object or body that has mass).<br><br> This is shown by the equation:<br> <math>w = m·g</math><br> <math>w</math> represents weight (in Newtons)<br> <math>m</math> represents mass (in kilograms)<br> <math>g</math> represents gravity (which equals acceleration due to gravity - meters per second squared)<br><br> Weight on a planet is usually measured on its surface, and each planet has its own surface gravity. Mass, weight, and gravity are all intimately linked, and together help explain the behavior of our surroundings and universe. 

Mass 
Mass represents the amount of matter that makes up an object or body, which determine the resistance of said object or body to a net force. The more mass an object has, the less of an effect a net force has on it. For example, it is easier to lift an empty suitcase than a full one, because it has less matter in it and therefore a smaller mass. It is also easier to stop a tennis ball from rolling down a hill than a boulder because a boulder contains a lot more matter and therefore has a greater mass than a tennis ball. 

An object will also always have the same mass, regardless of its position, movement, or change in shape, so long as no matter is added or taken away. Let's say you toss a water balloon to your friend. The balloon changes position, shape, and movement, but, as long as no water escapes, it retains the same mass. If you decided to add or remove water, you'd be increasing or decreasing its mass. 

The official unit for mass is Kilograms. 

Gravity 
Newton's third law of motion states that two objects or bodies that are interacting apply equal forces to one another in opposite directions. According to the universal law of gravitation, this occurs with every object in the universe — every object in the universe with mass attracts every other object with mass. The amount of attraction between objects depends, however, on the mass of the objects and the distance between them. As mass increases, gravity increases linearly. As the distance between two objects increases, the gravitational force between them decreases exponentially (raised to a power of <math>2</math>). This means that if the mass of an object increases by a factor of <math>4</math>, the force of gravity acting on it would also increase by a factor of <math>4</math>. If the distance between two objects increases by a factor of <math>4</math>, the force of gravity acting on them would decrease by a factor of <math>16</math> (<math>4</math> to the power of <math>2</math>). 

This relationship can be expressed as the following equation:

<math>F</math> represents the force of gravity, which is measured in meters per second squared. 
<math>M</math> represents the mass of a planet. 
<math>m</math> represents the mass of an object.

Near the Earth's surface, the acceleration of gravity is approximately 9.81 m/s2 (32.2 ft/s2). This means that if we ignore the effects of air resistance, the speed of an object falling freely will increase by about 9.81 meters per second every second. 

Weight 
Weight is a force that results from gravity acting on a massive object or body (in this context, "massive" does not refer to size, but rather an object or body that has mass) due to the presence of a second massive object or body, such as a planet. The center of each massive body is essentially pulling the center of the other toward itself, creating the force we call weight. For a more detailed description of this phenomenon, see the "Gravity" section above. 

Because the mass and, therefore, gravity of each planet in our solar system is different, there are no two planets in our solar system on which your weight would be the same. In other words, your weight on Jupiter would be quite different from your weight on Saturn, and your weights on Jupiter and Saturn would be quite different from your weight on Earth! Your mass on all three, however, would stay the same. 

Additionally, we often use the terms "mass" and "weight" interchangeably, when in reality they are actually quite different! For example, when someone has lost or gained weight they have really lost or gained mass in the form of fat or muscle. This increase or decrease in mass results in a proportional increase or decrease in the gravitational force acting on the person, and these two forces together result in what we think of as weight.

Ordered pair 
An ordered pair is a set of coordinates that tells us exactly where on a coordinate plane a point is located. Ordered pairs are written as <math>(x,y)</math>, in which <math>x</math> represents the ordered pair's x-coordinate (how far to move left or right, away from the plane's center, the origin) and <math>y</math> represents the ordered pair's y-coordinate (how far to move up or down, away from the plane's center, the origin). <math>(12,-9)</math> is the ordered pair of a point that is <math>12</math> units to the right of the plane's center and <math>9</math> units down from the plane's center. 

Coordinate plane 
A coordinate plane, sometimes also called an XY plane, Cartesian plane, number plane, or graph, is a two-dimensional surface that is formed by two infinite, perpendicular number lines called the x and y-axes that intersect at the coordinate <math>(0,0)</math>. This point is the center of the coordinate plane and is called the origin. 
To show that the x and y-axes extend infinitely, their ends are usually drawn as arrows. 

Coordinate planes are made of four quadrants, starting with Quadrant I in the top right, and rotating counter-clockwise around the origin. The locations of points on a coordinate plane are determined by the signs (<math>+</math> or <math>-</math>) of their coordinates: 

Quadrant I (top right): both x and y-coordinates are positive. 
Quadrant II (top left): x-coordinate is negative; y-coordinate is positive. 
Quadrant III (bottom left): x-coordinate is negative; y-coordinate is negative. 
Quadrant IV (bottom right): x-coordinate is positive; y-coordinate is negative.

Points with at least one coordinate that equals <math>0</math> are located on the x or y-axis, meaning they are not in any quadrant. Ordered pairs with the form <math>(x,0)</math> are located on the horizontal x-axis, whereas ordered pairs with the form <math>(0,y)</math> are located on the vertical y-axis. 

Other relevant terms: 

Origin: The point where the x and y-axes intersect. Its coordinates are <math>(0,0)</math> and it represents the center of the coordinate plane. 
Point: A point is a representation of an ordered pair on a coordinate plane. Though they are usually drawn as dots, points do not have dimensions and are only used to indicate location. 
x-axis: One of the two number lines that form a coordinate plane. The x-axis runs horizontally (left and right). 
y-axis: One of the two number lines that form a coordinate plane. The y-axis runs vertically (up and down). 
Abscissa: The x-value in an ordered pair. For example: In <math>(12,-9)</math>, <math>12</math> is the abscissa. 
Ordinate: The y-value in an ordered pair. For example: In <math>(12,-9)</math>, <math>-9</math> is the ordinate.

Understanding how to use coordinate planes is an important building block in the contexts of science, technology, engineering, and math. They are critical to tracking how a relationship between two quantities, such as a virus and a group of people, changes over time; they are essential for creating touch-technology, like smartphones; they are critical in planning complex construction and engineering projects; and they are necessary for understanding a wide range of topics in algebra and geometry. 

Coordinate planes are also hidden in plain sight! If you have ever seen people play chess, in a movie or in real life, you have probably heard them say something along the lines of: "rook to E4" or: "bishop to G3". E4 and G3 are both ordered pairs, in which the letter represents an x-coordinate, and the number represents a y-coordinate. Chess boards are coordinate planes (they just don't extend infinitely)! 

Understanding coordinate planes probably won't change your life, but it will help you connect the dots on some fairly important concepts.
