The power that <math>10</math> is raised to can be thought of as the number of places to the right (when the power is positive) or left (when the power is negative) that the decimal point needs to move.<br><br>
For example:<br>
<math>5.6\cdot10^9</math> is the scientific notation of <math>5,600,000,000</math>, where the decimal point moves nine places to the right.
<math>5\cdot10^-9</math> is the scientific notation of <math>0.000000005</math>, where the decimal point moves nine places to the left.
