Any point on a plane can be represented by two coordinates: the <math>x</math> coordinate and the <math>y</math> coordinate.<br>

The midpoint is the point that is exactly halfway between two other points. The <math>x</math>-coordinate value of the midpoint is the mean (average) of the <math>x</math> values of the two points; the <math>y</math>-coordinate value of the midpoint is the mean (average) of the <math>y</math> values of the two points. Put simply, you can find the midpoint of two points by adding together their <math>x</math> values and dividing the answer by two and adding together their <math>y</math> values and dividing the answer by two. This is precisely what the midpoint formula does.
