Logarithms answer the question: "what exponent do we need to raise a specified number by to turn it into another specified number ?" or, more simply, "how many times do we need to multiply a number by itself to get another specified number ?" For example: What exponent do we need to raise <math>3</math> by for it to become <math>81</math> or how many times do we need to multiply <math>3</math> by itself to get <math>81</math>? The answer is <math>4</math>, making the equation for this problem <math>log_3 81=4</math>. Spoken out loud, this would be: "the logarithm of <math>81</math> with base <math>3</math> equals <math>4</math> or log base <math>3</math> of <math>81</math> is <math>4</math> or the base <math>3</math> log of <math>81</math> is <math>4</math>.
 
The number that we multiply by itself is called the base of the logarithm. In our example, <math>3</math> is the base of the logarithm. 
The number between the base and the = sign is called the argument and is the number we get when we raise the base of the log (<math>3</math>) to the equation's solution (<math>4</math>). In our example, <math>81</math> is the argument. 
The solution of the log is the exponent to which we raise the base of the log to get the logarithm's argument. In our example, <math>4</math> is the solution.

A logarithm written with no base usually has a base of <math>10</math> and is called a common logarithm. For example, <math>log 100=log_{10}100</math>
